With Father’s Day around the corner, The Root Salon team wants to recognize the great dads out there. Here are our stories about the awesome dads we know…

Father’s day is coming up and I would like to dedicate this post to all the wonderful fathers, father figures and male mentors out there who have touched our lives — we appreciate your existence. I would also like to mention someone who has touched my life in a remarkable way, my father.

He embraced me with love and support when I felt the world abandoned me during my trials. My father has taught me the importance of hard work and sacrifice not by only his words but setting an example. My father came to the U.S. illegally in hopes to live the American dream and to have a better future for his children.

My father was born and raised in a ranch in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he worked with his siblings for long hours. Unfortunately, my father’s education was cut short when he was only in sixth grade and was asked to dedicate his time at the ranch. Twenty-two years ago, my father married my mother and came to the U.S. to begin their new life where they became residents and settled in Arizona. My father worked very hard and long hours at a fast food restaurant not knowing one word of English but he pushed through and saved enough money to rent an apartment.

I am the second oldest of four and I can always remember my dad telling me, “Mija, one day soon you will be a great asset to society. Study hard and follow your dreams.” My father is my superhero. Everything I do, I dedicate to him. He has supported me in all my decisions and accomplishments from graduating high school to supporting my decision to attend beauty school to celebrating with me this past May for being the first in my family to attend college and graduate with honors. My life has been truly enriched by having him in it. He has taught me patient boldness and loving sincerity.
