Men.

Men.

With Father’s Day around the corner, The Root Salon team wants to recognize the great dads out there. Here are our stories about the awesome dads we know…

Happy Father’s Day to one of the best fathers I know, my husband Sam.

This guy would chop off a limb if one of his children asked him to. He is the very proud father of Tyler, 24 and Trevor, 21. And, he is a pretty awesome stepfather and big brother figure to my son Anthony, who is 35.

From the time his boys were infants, Sam was right there changing diapers and staying up late with his all-boy kids. Natural athletes from the beginning (like their father), they boys were skiing, hiking, fishing, playing soccer, basketball and baseball from the time they could walk. The brothers were inseparable all the way into their teens and their father was more like their best buddy than their dad. But now that they are young men, they lean on him like the strong father figure he always was, all the time making sure that fun came first. I personally think he got it all from his father Harold.

All of these men are strong, self sufficient, and very good at what they do. Tyler is a graduate of Seattle University and in Army ROTC and is applying to the Seattle area police force. Trevor plays varsity Lacrosse for ASU and is studying criminal justice with a nearly straight A average. Anthony, my son, is a very successful local DJ and is engaged to a wonderful girl.

Men make fire!

Men make fire!

For several years now, Sam has taken his sons (along with some of his friends and their sons) on an all man hiking trip into remote areas of the country with no contact with the outside world. This past year was the first time that my son Anthony went. I was scared to death! I did not sleep the whole time they were gone. Anthony had a blast and they all leave in a few weeks to do it all again in a different area.

Most of our relationship, I have taken a huge “back of the bus” seat to his relationship with the boys. I admit that I have been jealous and often felt very neglected. It is hard when there are blended families and you don’t have children in common. But now that all of our children are grown, I feel like I wouldn’t want it any other way. All of them are so happy. I’m not sure I could have stayed married to a man that was not a dedicated father.

Sam is looking forward to being a grandfather while I, on the other-hand, could stand to wait several years. Our sweet next door neighbors just had their first baby, Natalie. She is three weeks old and Sam goes over to hold her as often as they will allow!

We will be spending today with our boys and our good friends enjoying our pool, playing water basketball, and some great food and wine. Just the way Sam likes it.

Happy Father’s Day, honey!
