Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Baby Steps to Plastic Waste Reduction

By July 23, 2019No Comments

We love this product!

Here at The Root Salon, we want to do our part to reduce our waste. You’ll hear all about how we are doing this at our salon on our upcoming Friday blog.

In the meantime, we want to tell you about two changes we’ve made in our personal beauty routine that have reduced our waste; specifically our plastic waste.

First, we’ve ditched plastic razors!

Instead we use a metal double edge safety razor. The handle and head of the razor is ALL metal and easily unscrews so we simply switch out the single sharp razor (it’s a fine razor blade, metal of course) when it gets dull. Unfortunately, the new razors come in cases that are plastic. Argh! But, each case holds ten razors so, at the very least, it’s still a reduction.

At first, the safety razor seemed a little scary because it looks so old-timey. But, honestly, it’s almost the same as using one of the plastic razor except for one major difference: you get a MUCH better shave!

Our second waste-reducing find is the Bite toothpaste pellets. These things are awesome! The whole point is for these to reduce plastic, single-use tubing and we were very pleased when they arrived in their glass bottles with NO plastic shipping packaging.

Here’s how it works: you use one pellet each time you brush, crushing it between your teeth then working the powder into a lather with your toothbrush. It really does foam up and they taste minty fresh!

The only drawback is that they do not have fluoride. But a little mouthwash can fix that (and now we’re on the hunt for mouthwash that comes in glass bottles).

If you are interested in reducing your waste, try one of these!
