Yay! (But I'm scared.)

Yay! (But I’m scared.)

Starting at a new place is always hard, that much everyone knows.

I started working at The Root Salon almost a whole year ago and being the new person in a place where everyone had known each other for years was definitely intimidating. Not only was I fresh out of cosmetology school and overwhelmed with all of the new possibilities that were in front of me, but being in a place with such talented artists and being the odd man out was a struggle. Here are some things I’ve found out that helped me when I first started.

One thing I found out that really helped me in the beginning was to trust the people around me. I’m sure I lucked out in this aspect because everyone here wants to succeed as a team so that was very helpful.

Being yourself and not pretending to be someone else is key. Anyone can sniff out someone who is not genuine from a mile away. If you are putting up a facade it just makes it all the more harder for those around you to be comfortable with bringing you in their circle.

Lastly, and the hardest thing, is to try your best to not make any mistakes. I know this one might seem a little unreasonable, but the better you are at your job, the more you’ll establish what an asset you are to the team. Of course this doesn’t mean that you can’t make mistakes. But when you make a mistake, don’t make any excuses, apologize, and learn from it.

Maneuvering yourself in a new setting can be scary especially when it’s your first time. You must always remember that if you don’t give your all and be who you are it will never work. You will know when you’re in the right place and when you’re not. There’s no point to staying in a place that doesn’t fit you. Everyone finds where they belong eventually and these tips will hopefully help you stay there.
